(Story - Segment 1)
Oh, hi! I’m Emilio. Join me in my adventures to St. Louis... Come on!
(Intro.)
Hola. Cómo esta? This is the story of my adventures in St. Louis.
St. Louis is in the state of Missouri, right in the middle of the US. The city is on the eastern border next to Illinois. The blue line to the right is the Mississippi River. The city of St. Louis is named after Louis IX, the King of France in the early thirthteen century.
This is the state flag. Flag in Spanish is bandera. The state flower is the apple blossom. Flower in Spanish is flor. The pájaro for the state is the bluebird, and the state animal is the mule or mula.
A vacation or vacación is a lot of fun and hopefully you will learn some Español or Spanish on this adventure in St. Louis! St. Louis is full of history and excitement.
Gateway Arch
Let's visit the Gateway Arch. St. Louis is most famous for The Gateway Arch. Arch is arco in Spanish. It is the largest monument in the United States.
This is my hermano, Fabio. Hermano means brother in Spanish.
The Gateway Arch is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, the third president or presidente of the US. Thomas Jefferson’s vision was freedom and democracy from “sea to shining sea”. This inspired Eero Saarinen to create this unforgettable monument.
El arco es enorme. It's really enormous. It took two and a half years to build this and represents the gateway to the West. The Gateway Arch recently celebrated its 40 th birthday! Feliz Cumpleaños! This stainless steel metal giant is 630 feet tall and just as wide. Metal is written the same in Spanish, but you pronounce it metal.
You can take a tram ride all the way to the top! And look, there’s the Old Courthouse!
Old Courthouse
Make sure you visit the majestic Old Courthouse where you will find out some pretty important things that happened here in St. Louis. In 1846, a slave named Dred Scott sued for his freedom. In 1873 Virginia Minor appealed to the Missouri Supreme Court for the right to vote. You see in the 1800’s women were not allowed to vote. Even though Ms. Minor lost her appeal, she did get a lot more people involved. It was not until 45 years later in1920, U.S. women were given the right to vote. When I turn 18 I will get to vote or votar.
Now let's go to the Museum of Westward Expansion.
Museum of Westward Expansion
Imagine its 1804 and you are a member of the Corps of Discovery led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. You know...Lewis and Clark…the great explorers who lead an expedition to find the Northwest Passage.
President Thomas Jefferson has assigned you and the Corps the task of seeking a river route from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean.
River is rio and ocean is oceano. You will explore the land recently purchased from France called the Louisiana Territory or Territorio. Your team will encounter wildlife and native tribes never seen before. You will also create maps and record any unusual findings and return safely to St. Louis. Vamos a explorar!
(The Museum of Westward Expansion preserves some of the rarest artifacts from the days of Lewis and Clark and is located at the base of the Arch.)
