21st century learners >
"Today’s learners have grown up in a digital world with cell phones, computers, video entertainment, iPod technology, and the Internet. They are hypercommunicators, goals planners, multitaskers, expert technologists, and active learners.
Yet, students experience a huge disconnect every day when they walk into a classroom. A classroom where pencil, paper, lecture, textbook, review, and test are still the norm. Engaging these students and making education relevant once again is critical."

Emilio's Adventures in Costa Rica
> School Library Journal
For Children's School Librarians - April 2007, pg 71, Multimedia Review. Emilio's Adventures in Costa Rica. DVD. 30 min. Ardome Prods. 2006. $15
"GR1-6 - Emilio, 9, and his family visit grandmother in Costa Rica and take viewers along on a video record of their travels. We learn where Costa Rica is located and about plants, animals, and geography of the country. Emilio also explores the market, walks through the rain forest in Monteverde, learns about ox carts, and visits the volcano and other locations. Some Spanish words are introduced and shown on-screen, but they are not always explained.
The program is exactly what it purports to be--a record of a family's vacation, with a few educational elements added. Some segments seem almost like an advertisement for Monteverde and its attractions. Emilio narrates the entire program, with unobtrusive background music and ambient sounds. The narration stumbles now and then, the camera work is sometimes a bit jerky, and the segue lack flow. Still, this program gives young viewers a brief introduction to an interesting country.--"

-My daughter and I watched "Emilio" last night together. We both enjoyed it. She liked learning both the language and the city. I particularly liked the way you shared history of the city as well as family attractions. It made me feel like I want to take my family there sometime.

-You have got to do more videos like Emilio in Costa Rica. These high schoolers eat it up! Teachers are easily sold on it, too!

-I played Emilio's Adventures in Costa Rica and the students loved it. I made a worksheet to go along and they actually paid attention. Your sons are beautiful. The neat thing is that I had some of the items in the mercado from when I visited Costa Rica so I was able to show them those also...Now you have me wanting to go back.

-I have succeeded in selling "Emilo's walk" through that web site of which I have spoken to you. The piece will accompany an animated publicity created by an English agency and it will be transmitted on a web tv. You have brought me fortune!
